Police in Kampala are holding pastor Augustine Yiga of Revival Ministries Kawaala over allegations of misleading the public about the covid-19 pandemic.
The man of God landed in trouble after he gave his thoughts about the deadly pandemic which has ravaged the world, saying it is nonexistent.
Yiga is captured on video while appearing on his ABS TV saying there is no Coronavirus in Uganda because no one gas died yet Uganda doesn’t have health systems better than Italy or Spain which is being ravaged.
Yiga also claimed that coronavirus is just like any other flue and called on his flock not to be bothered by the virus. He added that he is ready to be arrested if the government believe he is spreading falsehood.
However, Patrick Onyango the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman revealed that Yiga has been arrested for watering down the President’s efforts to fight the virus by his utterances.
“The actions of Pastor Yiga promotes the spread of the COVID-19 and can, therefore, be considered as a direct attack on the people of the Republic of Uganda. We appeal to the public to desist from making false or alarming utterances concerning over COVID-19 and disregard information not from authorised government structures,” Mr Onyango said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry of health Diane Atwiine had taken to Twitter to express her disappointment with Yiga’s comments demanding that he should be arrested and called on the Uganda Communication Commission to reign in and cancel his broadcasting license.
As we write this, Yiga is being held at Old Kampala Police Station awaiting prosecution.
