Christians Gather at Old Kampala Playground for Good Friday Joint Prayers

Hundreds of Christians from various denominations gathered at Old Kampala Secondary School to take part in joint prayers in observance of Good Friday.

The prayers, organised by the Uganda Joint Christian Council, drew believers from across the city, all coming together in a rare show of unity to mark one of the most significant days on the Christian calendar.

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for humanity. During the gathering, worshippers engaged in scripture readings, hymns, and moments of silent reflection as religious leaders delivered sermons centred on sacrifice, forgiveness, and redemption.

Clergy from different Christian denominations emphasised the importance of unity among believers, urging Christians to rise above doctrinal differences and work together for the common good of the nation. They called on Ugandans to embrace peace, love, and reconciliation, especially in times of social and political tension.

The atmosphere at the venue was solemn yet hopeful, with many faithful seen praying, singing, and meditating on the significance of the day. Security was maintained to ensure the safety of attendees, while organisers coordinated the event smoothly to accommodate the large turnout.

Leaders from the Uganda Joint Christian Council also used the platform to encourage Christians to extend compassion to the less privileged, reminding them that the message of Easter goes beyond the church and should be reflected in everyday actions.

“This is a time for reflection and renewal. As we remember Christ’s suffering, we are called to live lives that promote peace, justice, and unity,” one of the religious leaders noted during the service.

The joint prayers are part of nationwide Easter observances, with similar events taking place in different parts of Uganda. Christians are expected to continue with Easter celebrations, culminating in the joyous commemoration of the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

The gathering at Old Kampala Secondary School once again highlighted the role of faith-based institutions in fostering unity and guiding communities through spiritual reflection and national cohesion.
