Police in Old Kampala have recovered an AK-47 rifle at Tausi Bus Terminal in Bukesa Parish, Kampala Central Division, following a suspicious incident involving an unidentified passenger.

According to police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the incident occurred on April 14, 2026, at around 5:00 AM as passengers were being loaded onto a bus bound for Mbarara.

Preliminary reports indicate that a bus conductor was approached by an unknown individual who requested assistance in transporting his luggage. As part of routine safety checks, the conductor asked the passenger to open the bag for inspection. However, the individual declined, raising suspicion.

The conductor proceeded to physically examine the luggage and reportedly felt an object resembling a firearm. Acting swiftly, he alerted authorities, prompting a rapid response from a police task team.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers conducted a thorough inspection and recovered an AK-47 rifle concealed in a white polythene bag, which had been further packed inside a larger travel bag. The weapon was found with an empty magazine and no ammunition.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene immediately after sensing detection and remains at large. Police have since launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend him.

Authorities have commended the conductor for his vigilance, noting that his actions may have prevented a potentially dangerous situation.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the origin of the firearm, the intentions of the suspect, and whether he may be linked to any criminal networks.

Police have urged members of the public, especially those in transport hubs, to remain alert and report any suspicious behavior as efforts continue to ensure public safety.
