Police in Kabalagala are investigating a serious road traffic accident that left a journalist injured after a police vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure in Ggaba Trading Centre.

The incident occurred on April 15, 2026, at approximately 9:00 AM along a busy stretch of road between Maranatha Primary School and Maranatha High School, an area known for high pedestrian activity, especially during morning hours.

According to preliminary police reports, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace vehicle, commonly referred to as a “Drone,” bearing registration number UU 00067 T. The vehicle was reportedly transporting a suspect identified as Okello at the time of the incident.

Authorities say that as the vehicle approached the Mobile Court premises, it suddenly experienced a brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. In the ensuing chaos, the vehicle veered off course and knocked down a pedestrian who was walking along the roadside.

The victim has been identified as Mulwana Ronald, a 28-year-old journalist. Witnesses at the scene reported that the impact caused panic among bystanders, with several people rushing to assist the injured man as others attempted to control traffic.

Mulwana was quickly evacuated from the scene and rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. His condition has not yet been officially disclosed, but sources indicate that he sustained multiple injuries.

Police officers responded promptly to secure the scene, manage traffic flow, and begin preliminary investigations. The vehicle involved has since been examined as part of efforts to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure and whether it had undergone routine maintenance prior to the incident.

Investigators are also looking into the actions of the driver at the time of the crash, including whether appropriate safety measures were taken upon realizing the brake failure.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the roadworthiness of vehicles, particularly those used in official operations, and the risks posed to pedestrians in busy urban centers.

Police have called on all motorists to prioritize regular vehicle inspections and adhere to road safety regulations to prevent similar accidents. They have also urged pedestrians to remain vigilant, especially in high-traffic areas.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing, and more details are expected to be released as authorities piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
