Court Grants Bail to NUP’s John Mary Ssebuwufu After Prolonged Detention Battle

The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to John Mary Ssebuwufu following a protracted legal struggle that has drawn attention from political activists and human rights observers.

Ssebuwufu was reportedly abducted on January 14 and held incommunicado for approximately one month before being presented in court. Upon his initial appearance, he was remanded as legal proceedings continued, sparking concern among supporters who questioned the legality and conditions of his detention.

His release on bail marks a significant development in the case, which has become emblematic of broader concerns about political freedoms and due process in Uganda. Advocates have described his detention as part of a wider pattern affecting individuals perceived to be political prisoners.

Following the court’s decision, supporters reaffirmed their commitment to campaigning for the release of others still in detention under similar circumstances. They also reiterated calls for greater respect for civil liberties and the rule of law in Uganda.

Legal analysts note that while bail offers temporary relief, the case itself remains ongoing, and its outcome could have wider implications for political rights and judicial independence in the country.

After a lengthy back and forth legal battle, Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court has this morning granted bail to John Mary Ssebuwufu.
He was initially abducted on 14th January, held in incommunicado detention for a month, and then eventually produced in court which remanded him.
