Azawi Recalls Terrifying Night She Survived Sleeping In Police Cell After Gig Fallout

Azawi

Ugandan songstress Azawi has opened up about a frightening experience that saw her spend a night in a police cell following a performance misunderstanding in Luweero.

The singer revealed that she had been booked for a show in Luweero, but upon arrival, her booking agent had allegedly failed to clear the agreed-upon balance. Due to the payment dispute, Azawi and her management team chose not to proceed with the performance and instead remained inside their vehicle as they tried to resolve the issue.

However, the situation quickly escalated when a group of people reportedly surrounded their car, creating a tense and uncomfortable atmosphere. Sensing danger and uncertainty, the situation soon drew the attention of authorities, leading to Azawi being taken to a police station, where she almost spent the night in custody.

She described the experience as traumatic but also eye-opening, noting that it highlighted the risks artists face when dealing with unprofessional promoters and unclear payment arrangements.

Azawi emphasized the importance of proper contracts and full payment before performances, urging fellow artists to prioritise their safety and professionalism in all bookings.

Her story has since sparked conversations within the entertainment industry about artist protection, event management standards, and the need for more structured systems to safeguard performers.
